Equal's interior design draws its first breath of inspiration from the primal comfort of caves, offering patrons a sanctuary where relaxation is paramount. This sense of ease is further enhanced by the bar's clever use of lighting. The design's strength lies in its presentation of light, which varies in color, intensity, and reflection, creating an elegant ambiance perfect for wine tasting. The intelligent light controller allows for atmospheric adjustments, ensuring that each area is bathed in the most flattering illumination.
The design's unique properties extend to its construction. Special curved-angled walls with a multi-layer structure present a complex layout that the design team meticulously brought to life through precise calculations and assembly. Attention to detail is paramount, with every measurement of projection and output carefully considered to ensure the final product mirrors the draft with precision.
Technologically, Equal is a marvel. The use of environmentally friendly materials such as waterborne paint and mineral varnish, alongside flame-proof materials and LED lights, speaks to a commitment to sustainability. The bar spans approximately 1,743 square feet, with a focus on sake and cocktails to appeal to the female market segment. Efficiency during peak hours is achieved through a draft sake dispensing system, which enhances serving capacity and offers a unique champagne-like texture to the drinks.
The design team faced significant challenges, particularly in integrating functional elements such as wine racks, dispensing systems, and storage into the bar area without compromising aesthetic appeal. The solution was a seamless incorporation of these elements behind the curved walls, requiring close coordination with carpenters, ironworkers, and suppliers. The concealed construction of air conditioning, piping, and electrical systems added to the complexity of the project.
Equal's design is not just about aesthetics; it's a reflection of a broader concept of new retail development. The parent company, a Taiwanese skincare brand, envisioned a space that integrates a shop, bar, and event venue with a pickup kiosk. This innovative approach caters to modern women, offering a warm color palette and a layout that ensures smooth customer flow. The result is a space that is not only visually stunning but also highly functional and in tune with the target clientele's preferences.
As a testament to its design excellence, Equal by Tklab, under the creative direction of Ru Yu Wu, was honored with the Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2024. This accolade recognizes the bar's exceptional design, which harmoniously combines art, science, and technology, contributing to an enhanced quality of life and making the world a more beautiful place.
