Family With a Pearl Necklace

Luxury Residential

Inspired by the interplay of color, shapes, and functionality, this family residence presents the possibility of design as art, in support of art, and as a bridge to the appreciation and timelessness of award-winning collectable contemporary art to humanity.

A focus on humanity and the role of art in revealing the spirit of the client, the Family With a Pearl Necklace project by Idan Chiang is a unique and luxurious residential design. The centerpiece of the space is the Green Aquamarine Necklace, a piece by the contemporary French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel. This artwork, with its individually hand-blown glass beads, inspired the flow and aesthetic of the entire property.

The fusion of contemporary art and the spaces designed around them creates a transcendent experience that goes beyond materiality. The project emphasizes the interplay and role of art in reflecting humanity, showcasing the power of art to reveal the essence of the client.

The realization of this design required a deep emotional connection to art. The designer and client embarked on a two-year journey of gallery visits, art fairs, and exhibitions in New York, London, Paris, and Taiwan. Through this process, the imagined relationship between art and space shifted from object to dialogue, transforming the client's perception of art as a possession to a relationship.

The Family With a Pearl Necklace residence spans 1700m2, with 1400m2 of indoor space and 330m2 of outdoor space. The house features four floors, including a basement and three above-ground levels. It includes four bedrooms, two kitchens, an outdoor courtyard, a swimming pool, a gym, and a multimedia room.

The layout of the residence is designed to cater to the needs of a family of five, including a couple, two children, and one grandmother. The first floor serves as a public space, while the second floor is dedicated to the children and grandmother. The third floor is designed for the couple, providing a private retreat. The basement houses a multimedia space for family entertainment, complemented by the outdoor garden and swimming pool.

The Family With a Pearl Necklace project was completed in 2018 in Taipei. The design process involved curating a home art collection that resonated with the client, creating a chemistry between art and space. The interaction between art and space transforms environments, shaping human consciousness and behavior, and envisioning a better world through the seasons of time and emotion.

This exceptional design overcame the challenge of integrating art into the space seamlessly. The final pieces curated for the collection guided the overall design, resulting in a harmonious fusion of art-centric design and timeless works of art. The space itself became an extension of the art, blurring the boundaries between art and design.

The Family With a Pearl Necklace project, with its emphasis on art, design, and the human experience, has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award celebrates well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements, contributing to a better world.
