Philanthropic Design Transforms Living Spaces on TV

Kris Lin's "My Dream Home" Wins A' Design Award

Renowned designer Kris Lin's latest project, "My Dream Home," a public welfare renovation featured on a popular TV program, has garnered the prestigious A' Design Award for its innovative approach to transforming small living spaces into functional, beautiful homes.

Addressing the pressing need for improved living conditions among low-income families, Kris Lin's "My Dream Home" project is a testament to the power of design in enacting social change. The project, which aired on Dragon TV's "Extreme Home Makeover," took on the challenge of renovating an 80 square meter garden apartment in Hangzhou, transforming it into a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical and senior-friendly.

The renovation focused on maximizing the limited space by introducing large windows to incorporate scenic views, thus turning nature into an extension of the living room. The minimalist design approach, featuring larger doors and brighter interiors, tackled the issue of poor lighting head-on. Flexibility was key, with sliding walls and multifunctional furniture allowing the space to adapt to various family activities.

What sets "My Dream Home" apart is its dedication to senior-friendly design. Touch cabinets, adjustable islands, and accessible bathrooms were incorporated to ease the daily lives of the elderly. The design's unique properties lie in its dual purpose: serving as a philanthropic endeavor while also addressing the common disadvantages of small living spaces, such as poor ventilation, inefficient layouts, and lack of privacy.

The realization of this design was made possible through the use of smart technology and thoughtful planning. Electric sliding windows, floor-to-ceiling glass, and space-saving furniture that can be reconfigured as needed, all contribute to a home that is safe and accommodating for all ages. The open-plan design merges the kitchen and dining area, fostering family interaction and making the space feel larger and more inviting.

Despite the project's constraints, including a tight budget and a compact area, the design team managed to create a cost-effective solution without compromising on quality or functionality. The result is a home that not only meets the needs of a family of five but also enriches their lives with a design that is both beautiful and functional.

The success of Kris Lin's "My Dream Home" is underscored by its recognition with a Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2024. This accolade celebrates the project's exceptional design, which combines art, science, and technology to improve quality of life. The award is a testament to the project's impact, not only on the family it was designed for but also on the broader community, inspiring change and showcasing the transformative power of design.
