Shadow House: A Masterpiece of Residential Interior Design

Sanjay Newaskar's Award-Winning Design Inspired by Origami Art and Natural Elements

Sanjay Newaskar's Shadow House, an innovative residential interior design project, stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design. Inspired by Origami art and the play of light and shadow, this project showcases the designer's commitment to creating unique, environmentally friendly, and aesthetically pleasing spaces.

The Shadow House, a penthouse project spanning 4800 square feet, is a unique blend of art and architecture. The design incorporates floating trapezoid panels and lattice work, inspired by Origami art, to create an intriguing play of shadows throughout the day. This careful study of sunlight not only enhances the visual appeal but also ensures that direct sunlight, which can be harsh on the eyes, is effectively managed.

Sanjay Newaskar's design philosophy extends beyond aesthetics. The Shadow House is a testament to his commitment to environmental sustainability. The project uses water-based paint, which contains little to no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), harmful chemicals that contribute to air pollution. The paint, compliant with IGBC norms, reduces pollutants during construction and in finished interiors. Additionally, the project uses Rubio Monocoat, an environmentally friendly oil that colors and protects the wood in a single layer.

One of the standout features of the Shadow House is the natural green wall in the dining area. Green walls enhance visuals, improve air quality, and boost energy levels. They infuse interiors with life-renewing greenery, creating a pleasant atmosphere and environment. This addition aligns with the increasing trend of incorporating nature into urban living spaces to counteract air pollution and loss of green spaces.

The Shadow House was completed within nine months in Pune, Maharashtra, India. The design process was intuitive and innovative, with interlocking double volumes created internally to capture light and encourage the flow of prevailing breezes. The angled false ceilings and non-orthogonal geometry are a response to the sun path, shade, and wind, resulting in a unique form that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

Despite the challenge of designing a unique house in a scheme where four penthouses were already designed by Newaskar, the Shadow House stands out for its innovative concept and thoughtful use of light and shadows. This design prowess earned it the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017, a prestigious accolade awarded to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
