Papa’s Hostel: A Renovated Gem in Pingtian Village

Revitalizing China's Rural Residential Buildings

The design team led by Wei He explores the issues of revitalizing China's rural residential buildings, focusing on the relationship between the overall style of the village and the personality of the architecture, the comparison between new and old materials and structures, and the balance between tradition and evolution.

Papa’s Hostel, located in Pingtian village, Sidu Township, Songyang County, Lishui city, Zhejiang Province, is a remarkable example of the transformation of an ordinary rammed earth dwelling into a youth hostel with international standards. The project, led by designer Wei He and his team, aims to revitalize the building and create new functions and spaces while preserving its original charm.

The original building, belonging to the elderly Jiang Binlong, covered a total of 270 square meters and consisted of two floors. Affectionately known as "Papa’s Home," the building holds sentimental value for the owner and the local community. After discussions with the owners and the local government, the decision was made to transform the building into a youth hostel.

The design team utilized a combination of traditional and modern techniques to realize their vision. The original rammed earth structure was preserved, while a new section was added using wood, solar panels, and LED lights. The indoor lightweight structures, referred to as "rooms within rooms," were constructed using traditional Chinese tenon and mortise techniques. The skin of these structures is made of translucent multilayered solar panels with random-sized holes, allowing light to filter through and creating a unique texture.

The second floor of the building retains its original characteristics, with the conventional method of fixed walls being replaced by the concept of "rooms within rooms." Each unit within these spaces can accommodate 4-6 people, providing a comfortable and intimate experience for guests.

In addition to the hostel accommodation, the first floor of the building has been transformed into a public space for the village. The removal of clapboards that divided the space has created a communal area for socializing and relaxation. This space serves as a gathering place for both young people and tourists, fostering a sense of community and connection.

The renovation of Papa’s Hostel was completed in 2015, with a design area of 280 square meters and a total height of 7 meters. The project not only revitalizes a historic building but also serves as a model for the revitalization of rural residential buildings in China.

Wei He and his team's innovative approach to preserving and repurposing old buildings has garnered recognition and accolades. In 2016, Papa’s Hostel was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes the exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill demonstrated in the design, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence.

With Papa’s Hostel, Wei He and his team have successfully transformed a humble dwelling into a vibrant and inviting space, breathing new life into Pingtian village and inspiring the revitalization of rural architecture in China.
