Chaos in Black and White: A Fashionable Sample House for the Young Generation

A Unique Living Space Designed by Wu-Ching Chou

With the progress of information technology, the Generation Y have developed their firmly-connected relationship with the internet since childhood. Wu-Ching Chou, a renowned designer, recognized the desire of this diverse group to translate their experiences into their living spaces. In response, Chou created "Chaos in Black and White," a sample house that embodies modernity, fashion, modernization, and globalization.

The sample house, designed specifically for young first-time homebuyers, showcases the fusion of black and white elements to create visually stunning views throughout the space. Chou's genius lies in building a living environment that exudes comfort and diversity, aligning with the contemporary spirit of living, all within a simple aesthetic. The clever utilization of different lines physically and visually transforms them into integral elements of the residence.

Upon entering the sample house, visitors are greeted by a seamless connection between the living room, kitchen, and study area, all within a public space. The atmosphere in this area is intensified by fringed curtains, adding a touch of sophistication. The predominantly white walls, ceiling, and polished floor serve as a canvas for the design, which incorporates irregular-shaped marbles and black mirrors to adorn the television area.

Spanning 661 square meters, this residential space is a testament to Chou's meticulous attention to detail. The house seamlessly integrates black and white elements with diverse design features, creating an environment that is both visually striking and functional.

Chou's design expertise extends beyond the public areas. The bedroom, in contrast to the cold style of the public space with its use of rocks, concrete, and mirrors, is transformed into a warm and inviting sanctuary. Black and white elements, along with timber and wooden veneers, infuse the space with a sense of humanity. Stretch fabric walls, irregular line segments, and trapezoid closets add a touch of whimsy and expand the possibilities of the design.

One of the main challenges faced during the creation of "Chaos in Black and White" was striking the delicate balance between abundant elements and simplicity. Chou successfully achieved this by incorporating practical functions that enhance the living experience. The inner space features a bookcase made from different plywood, modern black-leathered couches, and irregular metallic lightings, reminiscent of the bustling cities of New York and Tokyo.

Completed in January 2014 in Hsinchu City, Taiwan, "Chaos in Black and White" stands as a testament to Wu-Ching Chou's innovative design approach. This project has garnered recognition and acclaim, including the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2017. This award is a testament to the practicality, innovation, and professional execution of the design, contributing to a better world.
