Architectural Harmony: Southeast University's Natatorium

Zhou Qi Studio's Award-Winning Design Fuses Function and Elegance

Discover the architectural marvel of the Natatorium of Southeast University, a masterpiece by Zhou Qi Studio that has garnered the prestigious Silver A' Design Award.

The Natatorium of Southeast University stands as a testament to innovative design, seamlessly integrating form and function. Zhou Qi Studio's approach to the space is a symphony of curved surfaces, creating a rhythmic ambiance that juxtaposes fluid water with the static concrete structure. The design's inspiration stems from the interplay of light and shadow, the movement of people, and the tactile contrast between the building's materials. This dynamic environment fosters a strong sense of place, inviting engagement and interaction.

What sets this sports center apart is its unique architectural language. The design breaks the building's mass into a series of continuous circular arches, softening its presence and fostering a sense of approachability. The absence of a traditional roof, with the roof and wall forming a unified whole, further distinguishes this structure. The natatorium's facade, a vast expanse of glass, creates a dialogue between the interior and the exterior, allowing for a visual connection that enhances the user experience.

The realization of this design was achieved through meticulous planning and execution. The construction involved cast-in-place concrete and the strategic use of dry-hanging terra-cotta tiles, ensuring longevity and sustainability. The design team employed a range of software tools, including AutoCAD and Rhinoceros, to refine their vision, while performance testing in areas such as acoustics and daylighting simulation ensured the building's functionality matched its aesthetic appeal.

Technical specifications reveal the project's scale: a land area of 6892 square meters and a gross built area of 5650 square meters. The building's dimensions, including a height of 10.5 meters and a length of 91 meters, accommodate two floors above ground and one below. The natatorium's chief architect, ZHOU Qi, alongside a dedicated team, has crafted a space that is not only a fitness venue but also a work of art.

The design's interaction with its users is straightforward yet sophisticated. The natatorium serves as a fitness hub, with a standard-sized swimming pool and underground water circulation machinery. The layout is akin to a traditional gymnasium, with changing rooms and a pool on the ground floor, complemented by a gym and classrooms on the second floor, ensuring a comprehensive fitness experience.

From its conception in 2018 to its completion in 2022, the Natatorium of Southeast University has overcome significant challenges, particularly in crafting the curved concrete arches that define its identity. These arches, which required precise manual formwork, symbolize the project's commitment to anti-trend, anti-industrial architecture, celebrating the raw beauty of the materials used.

In recognition of its design excellence, the Natatorium of Southeast University has been honored with the Silver A' Design Award, a reflection of Zhou Qi Studio's commitment to creating spaces that are not only functional but also inspire awe and wonder. This accolade is a testament to the studio's expertise and innovation in the field of architecture.
