At the heart of Illusory lies the humble sponge, reimagined as a vessel for fragrance and a statement of aesthetic beauty. Jingyi Miao and Hu Zou have drawn inspiration from the sponge's inherent qualities—its softness, porosity, and ability to emit fragrance—transforming it into an aromatherapy diffuser that doubles as protective packaging. This innovative approach not only enhances the user experience but also aligns with the principles of sustainable development, challenging the status quo of disposable packaging.
What sets Illusory apart is its dual function: a sponge that serves as both the protective lining for the fragrance bottle during transit and the diffuser upon use. By spraying the fragrance liquid onto the sponge, users activate the diffuser, allowing the porous material to evenly distribute the scent, creating a lasting and enchanting olfactory experience. The design's strength lies in its simplicity and its ability to maximize the material's value, both functionally and aesthetically.
The production of Illusory is as innovative as its design, utilizing BONDED FOAM—a recycled sponge material that is not only environmentally friendly but also resistant to aging and boasts high compressive strength. The designers have meticulously crafted the diffuser by pressing the sponge with a knife mold, ensuring an efficient and cost-effective manufacturing process. This choice of material and process addresses the significant waste generated by discarded packaging linings, which often account for up to 90% of packaging waste.
Illusory's design specifications were determined through rigorous testing and analysis, resulting in the optimal dimensions of 80 mm x 40 mm x 160 mm to ensure the best fragrance retention and dispersion. The outer packaging's translucent frosting allows a glimpse of the product within, reminiscent of a classic perfume bottle, and showcases the innovation and beauty of the design.
The interaction with Illusory is as intuitive as it is engaging. Upon receiving the product, users can remove the sponge diffuser from its role as packaging lining and begin their aromatic journey. The sponge's porous nature ensures that the fragrance adheres evenly and emits a continuous, charming aroma, enhancing the ambiance of any space.
Conceived in July 2022 and brought to fruition in April 2023 in Guangzhou, China, Illusory has already made its mark, being exhibited at the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. The design is underpinned by extensive research, including academic studies, interviews, and user visits, highlighting the environmental impact of packaging waste and presenting a viable, eco-friendly solution.
Overcoming challenges such as a lengthy research cycle and the quest for the perfect sponge material, Jingyi Miao and Hu Zou have succeeded in creating a design that not only holds fragrance effectively but also embodies durability and shock absorption. Illusory is a testament to their commitment to environmental responsibility and innovative design thinking.
Illusory has garnered recognition for its groundbreaking design, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2024. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that exemplify creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. Jingyi Miao and Hu Zou's Illusory stands as a beacon of sustainable design, proving that environmental consciousness can coexist with elegance and functionality.
