Dell' Albero Limoncello: A Blend of Tradition and Innovation

Award-Winning Packaging Design by Kent Walker

Delving into the unique packaging design of Dell' Albero Limoncello, a traditional Italian liquor. The design, inspired by the lemon orchards, combines tradition and innovation, resulting in a refreshing and functional packaging.

The inspiration behind the Dell' Albero Limoncello packaging design is as unique as the product itself. The design was drawn from the lemon orchards that produce the lemons used in this distinctive liqueur. Traditionally, the base of each lemon tree is coated with white paint to deter insects from reaching the fruit. This ingenious technique inspired the creation of a white ceramic base resembling a tree trunk, serving as both a stand and a 'chiller' for the bottle when placed in the freezer prior to serving. The package also includes two ceramic shot glasses shaped like tree nodes, which can also be stored in the freezer for a frosty nip.

Dell' Albero Limoncello stands out for its unique properties. The name Dell' Albero, translating to 'from the tree,' is fitting and validates the design choice. The slender, frosted flint bottle showcases the vibrant hue of the Limoncello and mirrors the handcrafted quality of the liqueur. The bottle is adorned with white packaging twine, similar to that used to bundle harvested lemons, and three labels printed on natural cotton stock using traditional Letter Press techniques. The bottle is hand-finished with white sealing wax, completing this refreshing offer.

The realization of this design involved the craftsmanship of glass, paper, and ceramic. The blend of these materials presents a truly memorable gift. The technical specifications of the design include a height of 300mm and a circumference of 100mm. The design tags associated with this project include packaging design, branding, limoncello, boldinc, craft, and premium.

The design team, led by Jon Clark, the Creative Director, and Kent Walker, the Design Director, faced the challenge of balancing original creativity and commercial viability. However, they successfully created an aesthetically pleasing brand and packaging with the functional benefit of keeping the Limoncello cold through the use of ceramic materials. The project was completed between November and December 2012.

The design of Dell' Albero Limoncello is a bold reinterpretation of the traditional Italian limoncello. The white ceramic base, resembling the tree trunk, forms an integral part of the design and provides a functional purpose. This design was awarded the Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2013, granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. These are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
