Old Meets New: Taipei's Terrace to The Sky

Chinhua Huang Transforms a 40-Year-Old Dwelling into a Modern Oasis

In the heart of Taipei's Wanhua district, Chinhua Huang unveils "Terrace to The Sky," a residence that marries the past with the present in an architectural symphony of light, space, and history.

The genesis of "Terrace to The Sky" lies in the archaeological-like excavation of an old house, where the discovery of red bricks led to their replacement with glass bricks of identical dimensions. This innovative approach not only preserves the building's historical texture but also introduces a play of light and shadow that breathes new life into the space. The design's unique properties stem from its rooftop location, offering an unconventional connection to the sky and a resort-like ambiance amidst the urban landscape.

Chinhua Huang's design philosophy is evident in the seamless integration of old and new. The original Japanese cypress screens and tatami mats from the 1960s are thoughtfully preserved, while modern elements like circular embossed glass bricks and smooth cement surfaces add contemporary flair. The rooftop's arched openings and deep blue velvet fabric create a private sanctuary, while the raised floors in the bedroom and bathroom areas imbue the residence with a sense of luxury and escape.

Technical ingenuity is at the forefront of this project, with the duplex spanning 180 square meters across two floors. The design team faced the challenge of maximizing natural light in a structure originally built with limited windows. Their solution was to create a terrace area by recessing the outer wall, allowing for an abundance of sunlight and a connection to the outdoors that is rare in such an urban setting.

The residence's versatility is further enhanced by movable partitions, enabling dynamic use of space. This adaptability is crucial in a building where the original floor plans were designed for single-family occupancy, and the introduction of light and privacy were paramount considerations. Chinhua Huang's approach to these challenges showcases a deep respect for the building's history while providing for contemporary living needs.

Chinhua Huang's "Terrace to The Sky" is a testament to the power of thoughtful renovation. It stands as a Bronze A' Design Award winner, recognized for its creative genius and contribution to improving quality of life. This project not only transforms a space but also sets a precedent for harmonizing architectural heritage with modern design principles.

With accolades and a design that speaks to the heart of innovation, "Terrace to The Sky" is a beacon of inspiration, demonstrating how the layers of history can be woven into the fabric of contemporary urban living. It is a celebration of light, space, and the timeless dance between old and new.
