The Residence of Moonlight: A Casual and Carefree Design by Tong-Yi Hu

A Unique Blend of Elegance and Rustic Charm

The design of The Residence of Moonlight, created by Tong-Yi Hu, embraces a casual and carefree style. Inspired by the laid-back and romantic atmosphere of foreign countries, this residence combines elegant American influences with the warm essence of the countryside. With its open layout and relaxing earth tones, it offers a welcoming and comfortable space for family gatherings and relaxation.

The Residence of Moonlight stands out with its unique combination of elegance and rustic charm. The large painted trim, reminiscent of classic country spirit, contrasts beautifully with the rugged exposed concrete coating. This unexpected pairing creates a special chemical response, resulting in a residence that exudes a distinct charm. The overall design achieves a natural atmosphere that is different from the typical style, making it truly one-of-a-kind.

The owner, a female teacher with a love for travel, wanted a home that captured the laid-back and romantic ambiance of foreign countries, particularly the elegant style of the U.S. Tong-Yi Hu and his team incorporated soft lines and relaxing pale-colored earth tones to create depth and layers within the residential structure. The goal was to ensure that everyone returning home would feel relaxed and comfortable, without losing the leisurely warm essence of the countryside.

The open layout of The Residence of Moonlight not only enhances the sense of permeability and broadness but also increases the opportunities for family gatherings and shared experiences. It allows for seamless transitions between different areas of the house, creating a cohesive and inviting living space.

When entering the front door, Chinese customs dictate that windows should not be directly visible due to feng shui taboos. To address this, screens facing the entrance do not adopt a transparent design. Instead, plain white art stone with partly transparent glass tiles are used to eliminate any feeling of oppression. Beautiful retro tiles separate the entrance from public spaces, creating an independent and welcoming space.

The realization of The Residence of Moonlight involved the use of various materials, including glass block, imported decorative tiles, imported handmade pseudo-classic coating, iron pieces, natural wire brush Sen veneer, dyed white veneer, cultured stone, and wood shutters. These materials were carefully selected and combined to bring the design to life.

The project, which started in September 2016 and finished in January 2017, was exhibited in Taipei in February 2017. The design team, led by Tong-Yi Hu, overcame various creative, technical, and research challenges throughout the process. For example, the material of the TV main wall is exposed concrete with neat iron pieces, creating a gentle and serene tone. The open desk features a wood veneer twill collage, solving the problem of wood veneer joint and adding a distinctive touch to the surface.

The Residence of Moonlight, designed by Tong-Yi Hu, is a testament to the core concepts of Bai Yue Interior Design: humanity, art, ergonomic, and technology. By combining aesthetics, ergonomic considerations, and quality craftsmanship, the design team has created a space that truly feels like home. The careful selection and deployment of materials, such as stone, wood, titanium, and original design elements, contribute to the overall precision and beauty of the project.

The Residence of Moonlight has been recognized for its excellence and innovation. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The design of The Residence of Moonlight has not only fulfilled these criteria but has also contributed to a better world through its integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
