Chuxin Pavilion: A New Paradigm in Community Service Centers

Integrating Internet Architecture in Multifunctional Spaces

In the heart of Shanghai's Minhang District, the Chuxin Pavilion emerges as a beacon of innovation, blending traditional Chinese spatial principles with cutting-edge technology to redefine community service centers for the internet age.

Designed by Jian Wu and his team, the Chuxin Pavilion stands as an exemplary model of "Internet architecture," a design philosophy that harmonizes physical and informational spaces. Located amidst lush greenery, this community service center is a nexus for urban life, nature, commerce, and community, serving as a pivotal public node. The Pavilion's multifaceted functions cater to diverse groups, offering office services, daily life amenities, and venues for social gatherings. Its unique location and design make it a landmark in the area, despite its modest architectural scale and budget constraints.

At its core, the Pavilion's design is a study in adaptability, with modular and arched structural units that redefine the space according to the community's pulsating needs. These units are not only structural but also serve as conduits for color-changing LED fiber optics, providing both illumination and ambiance. The ground floor opens up to the central green space, allowing for seamless indoor-outdoor activities, while the second floor hosts a coffee leisure area and an innovative mirrored glass activity plaza, reflecting the sky and surroundings to create an immersive experience.

The Pavilion's functionality is neatly divided into exclusive and adaptable functions, ensuring that essential services like restrooms and storage are always available, while multifunctional areas can be transformed for various activities. This flexible approach extends to the furniture, designed in modular forms to suit changing needs. The result is a space that can evolve from a quiet reading zone by day to a vibrant performance space by night, all supported by the latest internet technologies.

Jian Wu's design team, which includes Hu Jie, Yao Jing, Qiao Yu, Yu Zibi, Wan Li, Xu Weiwei, Li Yingchao, Huang He, Lu Yiwen, and Shang Jianhui, has meticulously integrated information technology into the Pavilion's architecture. Large LED screens double as walls, defining spaces while also serving as platforms for online interaction. The building's information scenes are projected onto the cityscape at night, enhancing its visibility and allure.

The Chuxin Pavilion's design journey began in 2021, with construction starting in September 2022 and reaching completion in April 2023. The team's research delved into the integration of internet and information technology in architecture, the evolution of community activities in an information-based society, and the creation of adaptable functional systems. The challenges of embedding technology into the architecture and creating variable functional systems were met with innovative solutions that have set a new standard for community service centers.

Recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2024, the Chuxin Pavilion is not just a building but a living, breathing entity that adapts to its users' rhythms. It stands as a testament to Jian Wu and his team's vision and expertise, showcasing how architecture can embrace technology to create spaces that are both functional and inspiring, now and in the future.
