Locksmithery: A Spacious Contemporary Apartment Embracing History

Transforming Ruins into a Unique Urban Oasis

Located in the heart of Stuttgart, Germany, the historic character and ruinous conditions of the former locksmithery buildings were the inspiration for Tina Kammer's exceptional design. By celebrating the authentic workshop character and history of the buildings, Kammer created a spacious contemporary apartment with an extraordinary atmosphere.

What sets this residential apartment apart is the seamless connection between two atmospheric buildings, now joined by an intermediated structure. Despite building regulations that prevented modifications to the structure and layout, Kammer successfully realized a visual discourse between the old and the new. This was achieved through the use of natural and sustainable materials, along with restored elements.

To ensure a healthy indoor environment, Kammer employed natural materials such as clay, chalk paint, wood fiber insulation, and linoleum. The existing historical door elements were carefully restored and relocated, preserving their original charm. High-quality fittings, switches, and sockets, all made in Germany, add a touch of elegance. The flooring and kitchen counter were crafted from Douglas wood sourced from sustainable forestry in the Black Forest. The windows, with their natural, oiled oak frames, were produced by local craftsmen.

The 200 sqm apartment boasts ceiling heights ranging from 2.50 m to an impressive 4.80 m, creating a sense of grandeur and spaciousness. The harmonious integration of the rear building and the individual design concept, which respects the historical substance while meeting modern living requirements, were key to the project's success.

The transformation from a former locksmithery to a timeless, modern home for living required extensive research and a sensitive approach. Kammer carefully considered the needs and living habits of the new owner, redefining the space's individual character and implementing a warm atmosphere. The use of natural, local, and environmentally-friendly materials was a central aspect of the design concept.

Overcoming the challenges posed by the building's ruinous conditions and the strict building regulations required meticulous planning and execution. The construction period demanded a sensitive approach to ensure the preservation of the existing structure and the safety of the project.

The Locksmithery project, completed in 2017, stands as a testament to the power of design to transform neglected spaces into vibrant, livable environments. Tina Kammer's innovative approach, attention to detail, and commitment to sustainability have earned her the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building, and Structure Design in 2018. This prestigious accolade recognizes designs that exemplify creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
