Minus: A Sculptural Approach to Minimalist Seating

Yifan Ding's Stool Design Marries Art with Ergonomics

Inspired by the timeless art of sculpture, designer Yifan Ding introduces the Minus stool, a piece where minimalist design meets functional artistry. This design not only serves as a seating solution but also stands as a testament to the symbiosis of ancient inspiration and modern ergonomics.

The Minus stool emerges from a philosophy of subtraction, where a simple cubic form is transformed into an object of elegance and utility. Yifan Ding's approach to design emphasizes the removal of excess, leaving behind a stool that communicates through its serene and fluid lines. The stool's unique properties lie in its minimalist form, which is not just visually appealing but also thoughtfully ergonomic. Each curve and indentation is purposefully crafted to enhance the user's comfort, from a lower curve that cradles the feet to an upper dip that supports seated repose.

Realized through innovative production techniques, the Minus stool is constructed from durable plastic, finished with a subtle blue metallic coating, or alternatively, adorned with marble patterns through hydro dipping. This method ensures each piece is not only sturdy but also possesses a unique aesthetic appeal. The stool's dimensions, with a width of 420mm, depth of 350mm, and height of 450mm, are carefully considered to balance form and function.

Interaction with the Minus stool is as intuitive as it is comfortable. The user is greeted by a top surface that surprisingly supports a variety of seating positions, while the bottom curve offers a natural spot for footrest. The stool's design also incorporates a scooped back, doubling as a handle for easy relocation, showcasing the design's thoughtful consideration for user experience.

The Minus stool's journey from concept to creation was rooted in rigorous research into sitting ergonomics. Prototypes were refined through CNC machining and user testing, ensuring the final design catered to a broad spectrum of needs. The project, which spanned from September to December 2023 in Pasadena, culminated in an exhibition at the ArtCenter College of Design, where it continues to be displayed.

Overcoming the design challenge of achieving the perfect surface flow to match the minimalist aesthetic was no small feat. Yifan Ding utilized AR tools to virtually inspect and adjust the stool's surfaces in real size and context, ensuring that the final product embodied the envisioned minimalism without compromising on comfort or functionality.

The Minus stool's innovative design has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Furniture Design Award in 2024, a testament to its well-executed design and practical innovation. This accolade honors the stool as a creation that not only meets professional standards but also enriches lives, aligning with the industry's best practices and contributing to a better world through design.
