Art aficionados often dream of living amidst their cherished collections. The Belvedere, perched on a scenic hill, is a realization of this dream—a house that doubles as a personal museum. Chikako Matsuo, the mastermind behind this architectural gem, has created a space that not only showcases the owner's art collection but also harmonizes with the surrounding landscape, making nature a constant backdrop to the indoor gallery.
The Belvedere's walls, constructed entirely of brick, may initially seem monolithic. However, this design choice is intentional, allowing the structure to blend seamlessly with its natural environment. The entrance, a prelude to the home's artful interior, features a porch with a warmly paneled wood ceiling and Towada stone, a unique material local to Akita Prefecture. This thoughtful use of materials extends throughout the home, culminating in a gallery space bathed in natural light.
Chikako Matsuo's design philosophy emphasizes the integration of high-quality, natural materials. The owner's specifications were met with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring longevity and aesthetic appeal. The traditional Japanese roof with deep eaves and strategically hidden windows and doors not only preserves the home's visual integrity but also provides practical benefits, such as protection from the elements.
Addressing the challenge of the intense summer heat, the design incorporates extensive insulation and an air layer between the ceiling and the roof. The minimal west-facing windows capitalize on the view while mitigating heat gain. To overcome the need for privacy and lighting, Matsuo ingeniously introduced two internal gardens and top lights, ensuring a well-lit and serene environment.
The Belvedere stands as a testament to Chikako Matsuo's dedication to creating a living space that is both a haven for art and a testament to sustainable, innovative design. Completed in 2022 after a three-year project period in Hayashima-cho, Okayama, Japan, this house is a masterpiece that marries art, architecture, and the tranquility of nature.
Photographed by Senichiro Nogami, The Belvedere has been recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in 2024, a testament to its well-designed, practical, and innovative nature. This accolade underscores the house's ability to provide fulfillment and contribute to a better world, embodying the pinnacle of architectural excellence.
