Changi's Terminal 2: A New Paradigm in Airport Design

Boiffils Architectures Transforms Travel with Biophilic Design

In an era where air travel has become synonymous with stress, Boiffils Architectures reimagines the passenger experience at Changi Airport’s Terminal 2, setting a new benchmark for airport design.

Boiffils Architectures has redefined the airport experience with the redesign of Changi Airport’s Terminal 2, focusing on passenger comfort and engagement with nature. The 120,000m² space, spread over three levels, has been transformed into a new 21st-century gateway for Singapore, aptly dubbed the 'Garden City'. The design team's innovative approach prioritizes the traveler's journey, infusing it with visual, auditory, and interactive experiences that elevate the mundane into the extraordinary.

The agency’s commitment to artisanal craftsmanship is evident in the use of natural materials throughout the terminal. Small firms and craftsmen were engaged to create many of the elements, contributing to a unique and human-centric environment. This attention to detail and quality not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also underscores the terminal's connection to the natural world.

Boiffils Architectures' collaboration with specialists such as botanic designer Patrick Blanc and lighting experts PhA Concepteurs lumière has resulted in a multisensory space that soothes and inspires. The integration of multimedia entertainment by Moment Factory further enriches the traveler's experience, making Terminal 2 a destination in itself.

The project, which began construction in 2020 and was completed in phases by 2023, is a testament to the seamless integration of technology and nature. The design conceals the technological aspects to spotlight the natural elements, creating an environment that is not only eco-friendly but also calming for travelers. The result is a space that serves as a tranquil prelude to the journey ahead.

Terminal 2's design challenges were manifold, but Boiffils Architectures has successfully created an indoor landscape that acts as a serene oasis. The lush vegetation, mineral features, and water elements are strategically placed to create a journey through nature, transforming the airport experience into a pleasurable and memorable start to any trip.

Recognized for its exceptional design, Terminal 2 has been awarded the prestigious Platinum A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2024. This accolade is a nod to the project's innovative design that not only pushes the boundaries of architecture but also enhances societal well-being by redefining the travel experience.
