The Inkwell residence, conceived by the visionary Jia Rong Li, is a celebration of dark tones and textures. It is a space where the scent of books and the spirit of intellectualism are encapsulated in the color ink, a symbol of depth and sophistication. The design team's clever use of ink-play art imagery against blank spaces translates the client's dream into a tangible, exquisite reality. The residence is not just a home; it is a unique piece of art that reflects the client's pursuit of an aesthetically pleasing environment.
What sets Inkwell apart is its distinctive use of slab tiles with stone textures that mimic the fluidity of ink-play paintings. This element is consistently applied across the TV wall, cabinets, floors, and kitchen island, creating a cohesive and dynamic visual experience. The variation in texture density, color, and layering ensures that the ink-colored space remains engaging and far from monotonous. The strategic use of blank space serves as a harmonious bridge between life and aesthetics, offering a serene backdrop to the richness of the design.
The realization of Inkwell's design was made possible through the use of materials such as slab tiles, matte suede paint, black glass, mirrors, and wood grain. The social areas are adorned with stone tiles, while the private spaces blend wood grain with black hues to foster a warm and inviting atmosphere. The transformation of a standard apartment into a modern, open-plan layout with a two-room configuration, including an open-plan study, showcases the design team's commitment to adaptability and contemporary living.
With a total area of 82.6 square meters, Inkwell's design specifications required a thoughtful reconfiguration of space. The conversion of a guest room into an open-plan study with display cabinets not only enhances the openness and lighting but also aligns with modern living preferences without compromising the original structure. This strategic adjustment epitomizes the design's commitment to functionality and style.
Inkwell's interaction with its inhabitants is profound. The client's satisfaction is evident in the frequent gatherings hosted within this space, which consistently garner positive feedback. The design's success lies in its ability to cater to both private and social settings, with personalized touches like a custom display cabinet for the client's Bearbricks collection adding a layer of individuality and charm.
Located in Taiwan, the Inkwell project was completed in September 2023. It is a culmination of research into the client's preferences for darker colors and the design team's innovative approach to combining ink-play art with the concept of blank space. The result is a cohesive and profound design language that transforms the residence into a work of art with a unique allure. Overcoming the challenge of integrating large structural volumes, the designers employed visual extension and smooth curves to maintain spatial openness and flow, demonstrating their creative and technical prowess.
Inkwell is a design that speaks volumes through its materiality and spatial rhythm. The interplay of dark stone walls, soft lighting, and the fluidity of curves creates a visual symphony that resonates with modern tastes. The design is not only a reflection of the owner's taste but also a narrative of their life story, elegantly framed within the art pieces displayed in the cabinet. The project's recognition with the Iron A' Design Award in 2024 for Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design is a fitting accolade for a design that exemplifies practicality, innovation, and the integration of industry best practices.
