Artificial Topography: A Fusion of Art and Comfort

Grand Prize Winner of Art in Container International Competition

Ryumei Fujiki and Yukiko Sato, the creative minds behind the award-winning project 'Artificial Topography', have redefined the concept of space with their unique installation. This design, which won the Grand Prize of Art in Container International Competition, is a perfect blend of art and comfort, offering a unique experience to its users.

The design was inspired by nature, specifically the concept of caves. The designers hollowed out the volume inside a container to create an amorphous space reminiscent of a cave. The installation is made entirely of plastic material, with about 1000 sheets of soft 10-mm thick plastic cut in contour line form and laminated to resemble stratum. The result is not just art, but also a piece of large furniture that offers comfort and relaxation.

The 'Artificial Topography' was created using digital 3D modeling and soft plastic materials, specifically 10-mm thickness Polyolefin firing resin boards. It was spaced out across a shipping container's 40-foot length, with dimensions of Width 2400mm x Depth 6000mm x Height 2400mm. The design was realized with the help of a team of professionals, including Kensuke Kawamura, Yoshiki Tachi, Shun Simoya, Kohaku Furihata, Yuki Sakurada, Toshihiko Hatori, Yoshito Fukaya, Yuji Uemura, and Yuki Ishigami.

The installation offers a unique interaction for its users. It is designed in such a way that anyone who enters the space can find a spot that suits their body form, allowing them to relax comfortably. The 'Artificial Topography' was exhibited from October 1st to November 23rd during the Kobe Biennial 2011 in Japan.

The design is part of Fujiki's ongoing exploration of nature-oriented architecture. This project falls under the 'Ground' category, following Fujiki's interest in the systems of nature. The 'Artificial Topography' is a testament to Fujiki's commitment to creating designs that not only mimic nature but also offer functionality and comfort to its users.

The 'Artificial Topography' was awarded the Platinum A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2012.
