UM Salon: Redefining Beauty Hair Salons with the Aesthetics of Scissors

Designers Four Lau and Sam Sum believe that scissors are as important to hair stylists as a second life. They go beyond their traditional function of trimming hair and become the embodiment of visual aesthetics. The UM Salon project revolves around the endless changing patterns of scissors, making them the focal point of the design.

The architectural space of UM Salon is filled with artistic, elegant, and delicate fascination through the virtual and actual representation of scissors. The designers have meticulously crafted the salon to evoke a sense of creativity and beauty, both in the hair stylist's craft and the space itself.

The design of UM Salon incorporates various materials to bring the vision to life. Brush lacquer painting, tiles, mirrors, glass, and stainless steel are seamlessly integrated to create a harmonious and visually stunning environment. The combination of these materials adds depth and texture to the salon, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal.

UM Salon spans an impressive 2455 square feet, providing ample space for clients to indulge in a luxurious and immersive hair styling experience. The design team, led by Four Lau as the Creative Director and Sam Sum as the Art Director, collaborated with interior designer Twiggy Yau and assistant interior designer Francis Wong to bring this project to fruition.

The realization of UM Salon posed several challenges that the design team successfully overcame. They had to find the right balance between reusing and rethinking the concept of scissors and its relationship with the space. Extensive research was conducted to support the laser-cut scissors screen panel, which adds a touch of intricacy and elegance to the salon.

UM Salon was completed in May 2012 in Shenzhen, China. Since then, it has garnered recognition and accolades for its outstanding design. The salon was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2013 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award celebrates the top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that showcase outstanding expertise and innovation.
