Bamboo Credenza: A Modern Solution for Organizing Home Entertainment

Integrating Technology and Design in a Sustainable Furniture Piece

How to organize all that constantly and unpredictably changing technology that accumulates around modern Flatscreen TVs, creating a piece of furniture that is at once about modern life, using tactile and rich and sustainable materials, while avoiding overtly fashionable references to the sleek plastic boxes that will surround it.

The Bamboo Credenza, designed by BUTZ + KLUG Architecture, offers a unique and sustainable solution for organizing and integrating home entertainment systems. This innovative furniture piece combines functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability to create a harmonious blend of technology and design.

Making the Credenza's Gestalt memorable through both material (Bamboo vs Polished Stainless Steel steel) and formal (Volume vs linear) contrast, the credenza is able to absorb the typical haphazard collection of disparate electronic components (remotes, DVD players, cable boxes, game stations, and components) surrounding home entertainment while remaining domestic and not overtly 'electronic'.

The Credenza is made of laminated bamboo plywood, an easily replenishable material that adds a touch of warmth and sustainability to the design. The details of the credenza amplify the intrinsic beauty of the laminations, showcasing the subtlety and uniqueness of each material's texture. The handcrafted polished stainless steel angles and relief in the bamboo enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the piece.

With dimensions of 2438.4 mm in width, 457.2 mm in depth, and 600.075 mm in height, the Credenza provides ample storage space for electronic components. The cabinet dimensions of 825.49999 mm in width, 457.2 mm in depth, and 187.325 mm in height ensure easy access to remotes, gaming components, and manuals.

Electronic components like the television, game systems, and speakers can be housed in the credenza and elegantly integrated into the design of the structure itself, while hiding connections to peripherals and outlets. The simple and straightforward organization of cabinets makes for easy access to all necessary components.

The Bamboo Credenza project began in June 2009 in Boston, MA, and was completed in January 2011. Throughout the design process, the team at BUTZ + KLUG Architecture faced the challenge of creating a piece of furniture that could accommodate the constantly changing and updating technological entertainment equipment while remaining both modern and domestic.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2013. The award acknowledges the remarkable expertise and innovation demonstrated by the Bamboo Credenza, which combines strong technical characteristics with splendid artistic skill. This design introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence.
