Nobolu: A Unique Hanger Stand Inspired by Japanese Hieroglyphs

A Sculptural Piece with Form and Function

Designed by Shinn Asano, the Nobolu hanger stand is part of the Sen furniture series, a collection of steel furniture that transforms 2D lines into 3D forms. Inspired by traditional Japanese craft and patterns, this hanger stand combines form and functionality in a visually striking way.

The Nobolu hanger stand is a testament to Shinn Asano's background in graphic design. With a focus on minimalism and simplicity, the Sen collection, including the Nobolu hanger stand, uses lines that minimize excess to express both form and functionality. The design draws inspiration from the unique shapes of Japanese hieroglyphs, with the bottom representing grass, the middle representing the sun, and the top representing a tree, symbolizing the rising sun.

Manufactured at a wire works, the Nobolu hanger stand is made by bending three pieces of steel wire into 2D lines. These lines are then combined and welded together to create a beautiful and sturdy structure. Additionally, three v-shaped bent wires are welded on top to provide a place to hang coats, jackets, hats, and other accessories.

Measuring at a width of 400mm, depth of 400mm, and height of 1700mm, the Nobolu hanger stand is both functional and visually appealing. It serves as a hanger stand for coats and accessories, while also functioning as a sculptural piece that adds a touch of elegance to any space.

The Nobolu hanger stand was first introduced in January 2012 in Japan and was later exhibited at the Tokyo Designers Week from September to November 2012. Its unique design and innovative use of lines garnered attention and recognition, earning it the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2013.

Shinn Asano's approach to design, combining graphic design principles with product design, presents a unique challenge and opportunity. By incorporating elements of graphic design, the Nobolu hanger stand not only serves a functional purpose but also communicates a visual message. It exemplifies the fusion of two different design disciplines and showcases the creativity and ingenuity of the designer.

The Nobolu hanger stand is a testament to the power of design to transform everyday objects into works of art. With its unique inspiration, minimalist design, and functional features, it is a standout piece that adds both style and functionality to any space.

As Shinn Asano himself explains, "The major role of graphic design is to communicate something to people, and product design is to be used by people. While such differences cross over with one another, respective results are achieved; I feel the challenge and the fun in such design process."
