Double X: A Revival of Architectural Knowledge in Contemporary Design

Designer Saïd Belmir's Award-Winning Table Inspired by European Mauresque Art

Unveiling the Double X, a unique flat-pack table design by Saïd Belmir, inspired by the intricate patterns of European Mauresque art. This award-winning design combines traditional architectural knowledge with modern design principles to create a piece of furniture that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The Double X table, named for the two X shapes formed by its structure, draws its inspiration from the octagram patterns of European Mauresque decorative art. This geometric art form serves as the structural foundation of the table, resulting in a balance between each piece of the assembly. The table's aesthetic appeal lies in its structural simplicity, which also doubles as a sculpture, lending it a unique aesthetic.

Designed to be easily assembled by anyone, the Double X table requires no screws or glue. The recommended material is 18mm birch plywood B/BB, chosen for its resistance, stability, and sustainability. The table top, also made of birch plywood, is covered by a light melanine layer on its two opposite faces. Alternatively, an 18mm plexiglas top can be used to reveal the intricate structure beneath.

The table measures 900 mm x 1800 mm x 750 mm and is assembled from nine pieces of 18mm plywood, cut using a CNC or laser device. The assembly works by resistance between each bridle joint, which is essential for the structure's stability and supports vertical loads. The geometric structure allows for an equal distribution of loads.

The Double X table project began in the summer of 2015 in Courcelles-Les-Lens, France, and was completed a few weeks later. The design was a result of extensive research and numerous sketches, miniature models, and empirical load testing. The table is set to launch in Paris in the summer of 2017 in a limited edition.

The design was awarded the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, a testament to its creative and professional excellence. The award recognizes top-of-the-line designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

Copyrights for the Double X table belong to Saïd Belmir, 2016. The design is a testament to the designer's ability to transform traditional architectural knowledge into a contemporary design solution, while maintaining simplicity and ease of assembly. The final result is a table that is both aesthetic and structural, and reveals the octagram pattern through its structure, staying true to its inspiration.
