Oblique: A Chair that Breaks Tradition

Redesigning the Concept of a Chair

Oblique is a high-quality chair that challenges traditional design norms and draws inspiration from constructivism. Designed by Quoc Trang Pham, this chair embodies simplicity, harmony, and a unique construction that sets it apart from others in its category.

Quoc Trang Pham, the designer behind Oblique, aimed to create a chair that would break away from conventional forms. Influenced by constructivism, this chair showcases the beauty of simplified lines and figures, using its construction to create a distinct aesthetic.

What sets Oblique apart is its unique blend of Asian design elements and the technique of bamboo furniture structure. The initial sketches of the chair were based on alternate lines and anthropometry, resulting in a design that is both visually striking and comfortable.

The realization of Oblique was a meticulous process, with attention to detail and continuous refinement. The use of a round bar for the construction made the assembly process easier and reduced waste. The seat surface was meticulously carved, resulting in a fully wooden chair that exudes craftsmanship.

With dimensions of 540mm width, 520mm depth, and 870mm height, Oblique is suitable for various settings. Whether it's for family dinners, restaurant tables, or workspaces, this chair seamlessly blends into any environment, adding a touch of natural elegance.

The Oblique project began in June 2016 and was completed in February 2017 in Ho Chi Minh City. The chair was showcased at the Saigon Exhibition & Convention Center in late February 2017, garnering attention for its unique design and craftsmanship.

Quoc Trang Pham's research for Oblique involved extensive sketching and studying different sitting positions. The aim was to find the best fulcrum point that would provide optimal comfort and support for the user. The use of bamboo furniture structure and straight round barlings added spontaneity to the design without compromising its strength.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was achieving a balance between durability, structural integrity, and visual appeal. By removing unnecessary details and using straight round barlings, the designer was able to reduce waste and create a chair that is both visually pleasing and functional.

Oblique Chair represents Quoc Trang Pham's innovative approach to design. It breaks away from traditional forms and embraces the principles of constructivism, resulting in a chair that is not only visually striking but also comfortable and functional. Its unique blend of Asian design elements and the use of bamboo furniture structure make it a standout piece in any space.

Oblique Chair was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2017. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
