Santamaria: A Stool and Storage Inspired by Tingkop Baskets

A Contemporary Twist on Traditional Filipino Design

Inspired by the Tingkop baskets of Palawan, the Santamaria is both stool and container. The intricate weaving and the insistent functionality of the pieces are faithful to the original objects. The twist here is that the objects are done in PE plastic so that they can be used outdoors.

Designed by Ito Kish, the Santamaria stool and storage is a unique piece that combines traditional Filipino design with modern materials and functionality. The inspiration for this design comes from the Tingkop baskets used by the Tagbanwa, one of the oldest ethnic groups in the Philippines. These baskets were traditionally used to store food and other items and can still be found in the central and northern parts of Palawan.

What sets the Santamaria apart is the use of powder-coated metal for the frame and PE plastic for the weaving. This combination of materials allows the stool and storage to be used outdoors, making it a versatile piece for both indoor and outdoor spaces. The weaving technique used in the Santamaria is similar to the original baskets used by the Tagbanwa, ensuring that the design stays true to its roots.

The Santamaria measures 343mm in diameter and 527mm in height, making it a compact and functional piece that can be easily incorporated into any space. The use of locally sourced materials adds to the sustainability and authenticity of the design.

One of the challenges faced during the creation of the Santamaria was ensuring that the shape of the basket was adapted to the stool and that the proportions were precise. The intricacy of the weave also presented a challenge, but the result is a beautifully crafted piece that showcases the skill and craftsmanship of the designer.

The Santamaria has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2014. This award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skill, while also contributing to improvements in quality of life.

Overall, the Santamaria is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines and the ability to blend traditional design with modern functionality. It is a piece that not only adds beauty to a space but also tells a story of craftsmanship and innovation.
