Contrapposto: A Timeless Blend of Sculptural Concepts and Modern Architecture

Exploring the Dynamics and Balance Between Lines and Masses

Inspired by the sculptures of Polykleitos, the Contrapposto side table is a unique fusion of modern architectural techniques and traditional sculptural concepts. Designed by Steven Avis, Xiaoqing Sun, and Qian Yang, this artifact aims to explore the dynamics and balance between lines and masses while creating a timeless design.

Manifesting its contrapposto in both formality and materiality, the Contrapposto side table is a true work of art. Composed of three anthropomorphic legs and ruled by a primitive geometry of cylinders, its topology is revealed through the lamination of Baltic birch veneers. The tabletop, an expression of circular geometry, is laminated with walnut burl. The table's blend of contemporary fabrication techniques and traditional wood finish creates a harmonious blend of architectonic and bourgeois aesthetics.

The realization of the Contrapposto side table involved a combination of digital fabrication and traditional French polishing techniques. A digital model was created in Maya using subdivision surfaces to generate a fluid dynamic geometry. This was then translated into a physical object using CNC milling. The table's unique chatoyancy effect in materiality was achieved through a hybrid of digital fabrication and traditional French Polishing. The Baltic Birch plywood was milled down and laminated to increase efficiency in CNC milling, and then refined by hand processing for perfection.

The Contrapposto side table has a diameter of 381mm and a height of 467mm. It is made from Baltic Birch and features a walnut burl tabletop. The finishing material used is shellac, applied using traditional French Polishing techniques. With a weight of 12.2 kg, this side table is a sturdy and elegant addition to any space.

This minimalist side table brings sophistication and harmony to any space it graces. The choice of natural materials, along with the unique surface shape of each leg, allows the table to capture different shades of light, adding an aesthetic touch to the atmosphere. Whether used as a functional piece or as a statement of design, the Contrapposto side table is a perfect fit for all occasions.

The Contrapposto side table was designed and realized by Steven Avis, Xiaoqing Sun, and Qian Yang in Toronto. The project started in May 2014 and was completed in August 2014.

Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to explore digital fabrication techniques and wood finishing methods. The team aimed to fuse traditional wood finishing techniques, abstract design, and new fabrication techniques. To increase efficiency, the plywood was first laminated at a wood factory into 2x18mm pieces. The 3D model was also sectioned into 36mm depth to allow precise milling by CNC machines. These pieces were then assembled into the intended design and refined using traditional hand processing and French polishing techniques.

The Contrapposto side table presented several challenges during its creation. The main challenge was translating a conceptual design into a physical artifact while considering the limitations of real-world fabrication. This included understanding the properties of different materials and selecting the most appropriate ones, working within the limited tolerance of CNC machines, balancing automation and handcrafts in production, and ensuring each step of the process, such as sanding, laminating, assembling, and finish testing, contributed to a harmonious final product.

Luxmea's Contrapposto side table is a testament to the fusion of sculptural concepts and modern architecture. Inspired by Polykleitos's sculptures, this design explores the dynamics and balance between lines and masses, creating a timeless and sophisticated piece. With its unique blend of materials, meticulous craftsmanship, and attention to detail, the Contrapposto side table is a true work of art.
