The HK Eye Sculpture: A Reflection of Hong Kong's Dynamic Skyline

Public Art Sculpture by Sin Chi Kei, Leung Siu Lun and Kan Ka Lo

Located at the heart of Hong Kong, the HK Eye Sculpture is a unique representation of the city's vibrant skyline and dynamic diversity. This public art sculpture, crafted from stainless steel, reflects the city's architectural history and its continuous flux as a first-class international city.

The HK Eye Sculpture, a project by Sin Chi Kei, Leung Siu Lun and Kan Ka Lo, is a testament to the dynamic, diverse, and vibrant spirit of Hong Kong. Inspired by the beauty of the skyline along the Victoria Harbour, the sculpture takes a radial form, emerging from its center to symbolize the city's constant evolution. The skylines of the Hong Kong and Kowloon sides face each other, representing the close interaction and dialogue within different parts of society that make Hong Kong a loveable place to live.

Located in Tamar Park, adjacent to the city's government headquarters, the sculpture is a prominent feature of the cityscape. Its mirror finish reflects the actual skyline onto the figurative skyline of the art piece itself, encouraging interaction with city dwellers and visitors alike. This interactive element invites people to take photos with the sculpture, further integrating it into the city's daily life.

The sculpture's realization involved a combination of digital fabrication and hand crafts using 316 stainless steel. The design team faced significant challenges during its creation, particularly in terms of structural design. The sculpture's form inclines towards the back with only a minimal footing to support the mass on top, necessitating careful calculation to minimize the depth of foundation while ensuring stability.

Another challenge was the fabrication process. The sculpture rings are made of individual buildings in radial form, which had to be unfolded into a flat surface for laser cutting. The pieces were then welded back onto the ring and polished by hand to achieve the mirror finish. The design team's meticulous attention to detail and commitment to authenticity resulted in a unique piece of public art that accurately represents the city's architectural history and skyline.

The HK Eye Sculpture was awarded the Golden A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2018. This prestigious accolade is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. The award is a testament to the sculpture's extraordinary excellence and its significant impact on the world with its desirable characteristics.

In conclusion, the HK Eye Sculpture is more than just a piece of public art. It is a reflection of Hong Kong's dynamic, diverse, and vibrant spirit. Its unique design and interactive nature make it a beloved feature of the city, embodying the essence of Hong Kong and its people.
