Revolutionizing Visitor Experience: The Flock Installation

Bean Buro's Artistic Interpretation of Logistical Data and Traffic Movement

The inspiration behind Flock was derived from the analysis of the company's logistical bar charts and the movement of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic around the site. The installation was designed to be site-specific, responding to the movements of the surroundings. It features a dynamic grid that allows the installation to be appreciated from all approaches and intuitively guides visitors towards the entrance through a subtle increase in height.

Flock consists of a series of columns made with power coated metal mesh with integrated LED tubes in the centre. These columns, varying in height from 500mm to 3000mm, are programmed to produce different lighting colours as part of the swarming formation that responds to traffic and people movement. At night, they glow and pulsate in multiple colours, creating an interactive and wind-like rhythm.

The design process involved various computer modelling and lighting simulations, as well as physical prototyping at 1 to 100, and also 1 to 1 scales. Despite facing challenges such as local statutory regulations and budget constraints, the designers were able to sustain their original vision through to the end. The result is an installation that strengthens the building's identity and legibility in the area.

Flock is a testament to Bean Buro's innovative approach to design. The installation not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the industrial building but also serves as a subtle reference to the company’s brand identity. The formation was an interpretation of envisaging the company's logistics activities and data.

The project, which started in May 2015 and was completed in October 2016, has been recognized for its excellence in design. Flock was awarded the Golden A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.
