Et Cetera Merlot: A Design Triumph in the Wine Industry

Valerii Sumilov's Exclusive Quality Wine Label Wins Golden A' Packaging Design Award

Et Cetera Merlot, a unique wine label design by Valerii Sumilov, has won the prestigious Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2014. This article delves into the design process, inspiration, and unique properties that set this design apart.

Valerii Sumilov, a renowned designer, was approached by the winemakers at Et Cetera to create a label design for their new line of limited-run wines. The challenge was to create a stylish and minimalistic design that would make the product stand out on the shelves. The design needed to convey a sense of exclusivity, given the high quality and price of the wines. Additionally, the design required its own unique product placement, a concept that would differentiate it from other local winemakers.

Sumilov's inspiration for the design came from a need to create a unique concept and effectively communicate the idea behind the trademark. The final conceptual solution was born out of intensive brainstorming. The subsequent steps involved choosing the right fonts, outlining the overall aesthetic, and selecting the post-printing techniques to be applied.

The label was printed on self-adhesive paper using metalized paint, adding to the exclusivity of the product. The label dimensions were 120 mm in length and 90 mm in height. The design's seeming simplicity, temperance, and limited color scheme made the project a serious task, as it involved creating special product positioning for the winemaking company.

The label’s task was to outline this manufacturer's wine from the rest of the offer and be remembered by consumers as something original, interesting, and unusual. The product is currently available for purchase in a restaurant chain in Chisinau and several specialized wine shops.

The most challenging aspect of the project was locating the fine line between creating a unique concept and effectively communicating the idea behind the trademark. However, once the final conceptual solution was arrived at, the rest of the process was relatively straightforward.

The design was a collaborative effort involving SHUMI LOVE DESIGN (TM), Financial Papers printing house in Chisinau, Moldova, and Ampelos wine company, also in Chisinau, Moldova. The design was awarded the Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2014, a testament to its outstanding and trendsetting creation that reflects the designer's prodigy and wisdom.
