The House in Shatin, designed by Michael Liu, is a remarkable example of transforming an old-fashioned style house into an urban-style home while maintaining the original construction without a trace. This innovative design deserves recognition for its boundless makeover and sustainable approach.
With a sustainable green approach, the House in Shatin has been transformed from an existing 1800 square foot, 40-year-old house into a spacious 3850 square foot, comfortable and modern accommodation. This design showcases the strengths of sustainability and unique features that set it apart from others in the residential design realm.
Technology plays a crucial role in realizing the sustainable living concept of the House in Shatin. Motion sensors are utilized for the garage gate and lighting, ensuring that all lights in the house are automatically turned off when no one is present. Aluminum panels are installed to prevent sun heat from entering the house, reducing the need for air conditioning. Additionally, large solar panels on the rooftop provide a source of natural power for water heaters, lighting, and backup batteries.
The House in Shatin incorporates a sustainable green approach to reduce environmental impact. By rebuilding the external walls over the old-fashioned style house, the original structure is preserved, saving on building reconstruction costs and reducing waste to protect the environment. LED light tubes create a time motion-like garage, adding a hip and surreal effect. Nature is brought indoors through the inclusion of a small maple tree in the center of the house, creating an interaction between ecology and living space. The open roof above the maple tree provides sunlight for the tree and brings natural light into the glass partitioned study room.
The House in Shatin project was completed in April 2013, showcasing the designer's dedication to sustainability and innovative design. By breaking boundaries between interior and exterior space, this design establishes a green and conscious lifestyle, meeting the growing demand for sustainable living in today's society.
This remarkable design has been recognized with the prestigious A' Design Award, receiving the Silver Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2014. The House in Shatin is a testament to outstanding expertise, innovation, and excellence in design, evoking positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
