The biggest challenge of the project was to accommodate the client's aggressive programmatic needs within the constraints of a small space and a tight budget. With only 44 square meters available, the design team had to find a way to fit 40 seats without compromising on comfort or functionality. To achieve this, the walls and ceiling were minimally finished, exposing the raw and unfinished texture of the space, while the existing floor tiles were replaced with an exposed sealed concrete finish.
Despite the industrial aesthetic, Grille offers a warm and inviting dining experience. The design team achieved this by incorporating a contrasting color scheme that adds a touch of warmth to the space. The natural concrete look of the walls and ceiling provides a neutral backdrop for the vibrant colors used in the furnishings and decor.
Grille's unique properties lie in its ability to repurpose an existing space and transform it into a thriving barbeque bistro. The design not only embraces the industrial charm of the original motorcycle repair shop but also meets the client's functional requirements. With a total construction budget of HK$320,000, the project demonstrates the team's ability to create innovative and cost-effective solutions.
The success of Grille has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2014. This award is a testament to the design's outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. Grille's ability to create a remarkable dining experience within a small space has captivated both guests and design professionals alike.
