David Irwin's M Lamp: A Modern Take on Industrial Heritage

Golden A' Design Award Winner Brings Innovation to Lighting

David Irwin's M Lamp, a wireless task light, marries the functional aspects with the overall experience the product creates. Inspired by the industrial heritage of Newcastle Upon Tyne, it's a contemporary piece with minimal form that still resonates emotionally and references the past.

The M Lamp stands at 9", projects up to 250 Lumens of warm light from its movable head, equivalent to a 40-watt incandescent bulb. The advanced technology battery included in the fixture provides illumination from 6 to 72 hours based on the light level being used. This versatile lamp can be transported anywhere within the home, office, and in between, making it a perfect companion for our increasingly mobile lifestyle.

Irwin drew inspiration from archetypal forms of lighting throughout history, particularly lanterns and portable light sources. The M Lamp's design, materials, and manufacturing methods reference and update these historical forms. The lamp's handle for carrying and hanging in various positions, conical diffuser for directing light, and rotational head make it versatile enough to be used as a task light, table lamp, floor lamp, etc.

One of the significant innovations underlying the M Lamp is the balance between the typical glare of LEDs and battery efficiency. The lamp utilizes advanced light diffusion technology to create the proper glow, while the advanced battery technology provides extended illumination. Without recent advancements of LED and energy storage technology, the M Lamp would not have been viable.

The M Lamp is engineered, assembled, and finished entirely in North America. Parts are sourced locally whenever possible, and certain electronics components are produced globally. This approach ensures local production while maintaining costs by taking advantage of global manufacturing resources.

David Irwin's M Lamp is a testament to the designer's ability to create innovative products that reference our industrial heritage. It's a modern take on the past, a light source that's not only functional but also creates a certain mood and atmosphere. It's a perfect example of how design can marry form and function, creating products that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also serve a practical purpose.

The M Lamp was awarded Golden in A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2014. The Golden A' Design Award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
