Magmarama: A Unique Mining Museum Inspired by Sedimentology

Unveiling the Beauty of Rocks and Nature

Magmarama stands out from other museums with its distinctive design that seamlessly blends with the surrounding landscape. The building is partially submerged underground, creating an illusion of mountains with a valley. The rising parts of the structure mimic the natural rock formations, providing visitors with a sense of awe and wonder.

One of the most striking features of Magmarama is the strategic placement of windows, which allows abundant natural light to flood the interior. The windows are positioned in such a way that they offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, creating a harmonious connection between the museum and its natural surroundings.

Inside the museum, visitors will be greeted with three levels of immersive exhibits and displays. The interior walls, reminiscent of wood, add warmth and texture to the space, thanks to the unique concrete structure inspired by the grain of wood. The use of concrete throughout the museum gives it a warm undertone, enhancing the overall ambiance.

The sloping roof surfaces of Magmarama are covered with a type of granite, typically a bright larvikite with a broken surface. This choice not only adds visual interest but also complements the natural surroundings, further blurring the boundaries between the museum and the landscape.

Designed by Manuela Hardy and her team, Magmarama spans an impressive 1935.5 square meters. The project took approximately one year to complete, with meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of sedimentology and rock science.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was how to create a sense of lightness and openness in an underground space. The team successfully overcame this hurdle by strategically incorporating glass surfaces and angles that reflect sunlight, ensuring that even the darkest corners of the museum are bathed in natural light.

Magmarama is a testament to the power of design and innovation. By seamlessly integrating art, architecture, and technology, Manuela Hardy has created a museum that not only showcases the beauty of rocks and nature but also provides visitors with a unique and immersive experience.

Magmarama was awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2014 in the category of Architecture, Building, and Structure Design. This recognition highlights the museum's exceptional design, practicality, and innovation, making it a true gem in the world of architecture.
