The design team's primary intention was to create an unusual and unexpected concrete house in a typical town. The meaning of the Escape house is ambiguous, with 'E' signifying 'different.' The house introduces a different scenery into the town, offering residents a variety of views from inside the house, including a panoramic view from the living room. The Escape house is seen as the final destination for escaping from ordinary daily life.
The house's facade from the street is massive and inappropriate with the surroundings, making it a mysterious place. This sudden and embarrassing form is a result of the team's commitment to embracing diversity and the astonishing. The house's unique properties lie in its ability to create an unfamiliar place in a typical suburban house town.
Constructed with a reinforced concrete structure and silver cloud stone finishes, the house covers a site area of 225.60m2, a building area of 185.9m2, a gross floor area of 328.00m2, and stands 9.5m tall. The design team, consisting of Hohyun Park, Hyunjoo Kim, and Seonggon Cho, started the project in March 2019 and completed it in October 2020 in Pohang, Korea.
The Escape house functions as a living platform, offering a multilayer space for everyday life. The central staircase, which connects floors in half level, is not just for moving but also for sitting and chatting under the skylight. The rooftop, open to the woods, provides the ultimate outdoor activity space, especially under the COVID-19 situation.
Escape House is an architectural marvel that stands as a testament to the power of design to create spaces that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and emotionally engaging. It is a design that challenges the norms and invites us to embrace the unexpected and the different. The Silver A' Design Award is a well-deserved recognition for this remarkable design.
