A Simple and Innovative Chair Inspired by Scandinavian Design

The inspiration for the Pillow Stool came from the designer's experience living in Copenhagen, where simplicity and meaningful design are highly valued. Hong Ying Guo aimed to capture the essence of Scandinavian design by integrating traditional values with innovative technology. The result is a chair that not only looks inviting but also enhances the user's experience.

What sets the Pillow Stool apart is its simple yet engaging design. The steel rods on the first and second layers of the sitting part intersect, creating a visually captivating effect of light and shadow. The curve counter of the side structure provides comfortable round edges and surfaces for users to sit on. Additionally, the space between the layers of the sitting part can be used to store magazines or newspapers, adding a practical element to the chair's design.

The realization of the Pillow Stool involves steel bar rolling, bending, and welding techniques. The result is a chair that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also durable and sturdy. With dimensions of W/17.7”, H/19.3”, L/24.8”, the Pillow Stool is designed to fit seamlessly into any modern living space.

Designed and produced in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2010, the Pillow Stool is a testament to the designer's exploration of Scandinavian furniture design. Hong Ying Guo participated in the Scandinavian Furniture Design program at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad, where the chair was conceived. The program included design lectures, workshops, and visits to renowned design museums, firms, and companies in Helsinki, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden.

The Pillow Stool has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2014. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
