BROCKMAN MINING LIMITED: A Unique Office Design Inspired by Nature and Geometry

Efficiency and Productivity in a World-Class Commercial Building

Aligning the prestige with a less than stereotypical office design, Catherine Cheung, the renowned designer behind BROCKMAN MINING LIMITED's office, implemented a very brave functionally geometric design that paid off. Inspired by the inside of a mine, Cheung visualized the different stones and surfaces, drawing inspiration from the variety of faces, structures, and geometric lines.

As an investment firm based in the mining trade, efficiency and productivity are key aspects in the business routine. The design was initially inspired by nature, with an emphasis on geometry. In upkeeping the prestige and reputation of the world-class commercial building, a unique corporate arena is born through the use of glass and steel. The design replicates the various faces, materials, structures, and geometric lines that one would expect to see on rock surfaces.

The interior of the office is transformed into a maze of steel and glass, strategically ensuring that the space remains a comfortable and efficient oasis by inviting the exterior into the interior. The curtain wall design combines angular pieces of glass and steel, recreating the different rock surfaces that one would expect to see during a mine extraction.

The neutral and fitting color scheme, consisting of whites, greys, blacks, and silvers, rounds up the interior balance. These colors not only enhance the interior's natural light but also soften the darker shades and lines, avoiding a rigid office atmosphere.

The BROCKMAN MINING LIMITED office spans 3000 square feet, with a 30-meter by 10-meter area and a 2.5-meter height. The mini facade measures 8 meters, while the sliding windows are 18 meters wide and 2.5 meters high.

This project was completed in January 2013 in Hong Kong by THE XSS Design Team, led by Catherine Cheung. The design team's extensive research on geometrical and psychological understandings of form and space was visually translated into the unique office design.

The BROCKMAN MINING LIMITED office design was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2014 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The office design showcases a remarkable level of excellence, introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
