115 Bathurst St. Mixed-use Development: A Confluence of Art and Architecture

Combining the Old and the New to Create a Unique Architectural Icon

Situated in the heart of Sydney's commercial district, the 115 Bathurst St. Mixed-use Development is a testament to the convergence of art, culture, and architecture. Designed by Aedas, this project seamlessly combines the adaptive reuse of an existing structure with the creation of a new high-rise residential tower, all while paying homage to the rich heritage of Australia.

Inspired by the geometric line forms of Aboriginal art and the contemporary sculptures of Clement Meadmore, the design of 115 Bathurst St. celebrates the essence of Australian art and nature. The concept of confluence, where the old and the new come together, forms the foundation of this architectural masterpiece. It looks confidently towards the future while respecting and acknowledging the past.

One of the most significant challenges of this project was creating an indigenous icon specific to Sydney and Australian culture. Aedas successfully achieved this by integrating the local context and responding to the surrounding architectural environment. The result is a design that engages directly with the social and cultural aspirations of Sydney and Australia.

The design team at Aedas employed innovative technology to realize their vision. To maintain the projected construction program and minimize demolition and excavation, a metal core-wall formwork system was used. This allowed for the creation of structural walls that fit within the existing steel girders of the office tower, ensuring a seamless integration of the old and the new.

The 115 Bathurst St. Mixed-use Development spans a gross area of 63,000 square meters and includes a podium that provides spaces for public art programs. This integration of art and architecture not only enhances the visual appeal of the project but also contributes to the cultural vibrancy of the surrounding area.

A testament to its excellence, the 115 Bathurst St. Mixed-use Development was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2014. This prestigious accolade recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. Aedas' creation showcases a remarkable level of excellence and introduces a sense of wonder and amazement.

With its unique blend of art, architecture, and cultural significance, the 115 Bathurst St. Mixed-use Development stands as a shining example of how design can shape and enhance our urban landscapes. It is a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in creating spaces that inspire and uplift.
