Meline: An Innovative Stool with Storage

Combining Functionality and Minimalism

Meline is an innovative stool designed by Eliane Zakhem that solves the problem of limited space in art and design studios. Inspired by the iconic De Stijl style, Meline offers not only seating but also a convenient storage solution. With its sleek design and practical features, Meline is a reliable and stylish addition to any creative space.

Meline was born out of a personal experience that designer Eliane Zakhem had in her university drawing class. The lack of space on the small drawing table prompted her to create a stool that could serve as an extension of the workspace. The colors and lines of Meline are inspired by the De Stijl movement, specifically the architecture of Rietveld's Schroder House.

What sets Meline apart from other stools is its unique storage capabilities. The stool features a shelf that extends outward, providing ample space to store items such as notebooks, a pencil case, or even a water bottle. The shelf is designed to keep items in place, ensuring easy access and organization. Additionally, Meline includes an extruded peg to hang jackets or bags, keeping them within reach and off the floor.

The realization of Meline involved a meticulous design process. Zakhem started by sketching the stool, focusing on rectilinear lines to mimic the slabs found on the facade of Schroder House. She then created a technical drawing using AutoCAD to visualize the design better and guide the production process. Zakhem collaborated with a local carpenter, selecting oak hardwood for the frame and an MDF laminate for the seating. The natural wood color of the frame adds a crafty touch to the stool. Zakhem personally supervised the carpenter's work to ensure high craftsmanship and clean joinery. To complete the design, she hand-painted the primary colors herself, adding a vibrant touch to the stool.

The specifications of Meline are as follows: the overall dimensions are 440 mm in width, 360 mm in depth, and 940 mm in height. The seat measures 360 mm in width and 330 mm in depth, while the shelf has dimensions of 440 mm in width and 295 mm in depth.

Meline is not just a stool; it is a functional and versatile piece of furniture. Its sturdy construction makes it suitable for classroom use, while its lightweight design allows for easy mobility. The storage shelf and peg provide convenient solutions for keeping tools, belongings, jackets, and bags within reach and off the floor.

The Meline project was completed in February 2014 in Beirut, Lebanon. Zakhem conducted extensive research to ensure that her design would meet the needs of art and design students. She explored the market and furniture shops but found no stool that offered the extra storage space that Meline provides. This realization motivated her to create a product with added value.

Meline has received recognition for its design excellence. In 2014, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Meline's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world earned it this esteemed accolade.

Meline is not just a stool; it is a reliable companion for artists and designers. With its unique storage features, sleek design, and sturdy craftsmanship, Meline is the perfect addition to any creative space.
