Highcliff: A Hilltop Residence Embracing Modern Architecture and Sustainable Design

A Unique Blend of Form, Function, and Nature

The Highcliff Residence, designed by Colega, is a stunning hilltop residence in Los Angeles that seamlessly blends modern architecture, sustainable design, and a deep connection with nature. Inspired by the form of a Japanese Shibori fan, this unique design maximizes the breathtaking views of the cityscape while harmonizing with the surrounding neighborhood.

To fit into the context of the neighborhood, the Highcliff Residence features a single-story structure with a single sloping roof that extends upward and outward. This design choice not only captures the expansive views of the Los Angeles basin but also creates a dynamic and open character for the rear elevation. The modest appearance along the street frontage contrasts with the captivating and inviting atmosphere of the rear of the house.

The house is thoughtfully programmed to include both a private wing and a public wing. The private wing houses two guest rooms and the master bedroom, providing a tranquil retreat for residents and guests. On the other hand, the public wing consists of the music room, kitchen, and living room, creating a vibrant and social space for gatherings. These two wings extend from the dining room, framing the breathtaking view and creating an open, private courtyard that serves as the heart of the residence.

What sets the Highcliff Residence apart is its commitment to sustainability. The design incorporates both passive and active systems to minimize its environmental impact. Recycled rice husk siding, large operable fenestration, and thin film laminated photovoltaic sheets seamlessly integrated over recycled metal cool roofing contribute to the house's energy efficiency. Additionally, a complete grey water recycling system and drought-tolerant landscaping minimize water consumption and maintenance. The landscape design also engages the human senses, creating a sensory experience that goes beyond sight.

The Highcliff Residence, with its unique blend of form, function, and sustainability, has garnered recognition in the design world. In 2014, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills while contributing to quality of life improvements. The Highcliff Residence truly exemplifies the best practices in art, science, design, and technology, making it a remarkable addition to the architectural landscape of Los Angeles.

With its innovative design, sustainable features, and harmonious integration with nature, the Highcliff Residence is a testament to Colega's expertise and vision. This hilltop residence stands as a shining example of modern architecture that not only enhances the lives of its residents but also inspires others to embrace sustainable design principles.
