Traditional jalousie windows have long been used in tropical countries like Malaysia to allow for natural ventilation. Inspired by this concept, Jerome Thia sought to apply it on a larger scale and in a different direction. The result is JPDoor, a door that not only offers privacy but also allows users to control the level of disclosure by simply flipping the solid wood panels.
Unlike traditional solid opaque doors that need to be swung aside to let in light and fresh air, JPDoor's jalousie system provides a practical solution. The powder-coated metal frame and solid wood panels create a sleek and modern look while ensuring durability and functionality. The door measures 1650mm (L) x 2700mm (H) x 75mm (D), making it suitable for various architectural settings.
One of the key strengths of JPDoor is its user-friendly design. By incorporating the jalousie window concept, the door becomes interactive, allowing users to see through to the other side without the need to swing it open. This not only saves space but also adds a unique touch to the overall design.
The design process for JPDoor took approximately four weeks. Two weeks were dedicated to refining and modifying the design to achieve the best outcome possible, while the remaining two weeks were spent on sourcing fittings and constructing the door. The project was carried out in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
One of the main challenges faced during the design process was finding the right fittings to support the weight of the door while maintaining its functionality. However, with careful research and experimentation, Jerome Thia was able to overcome this obstacle and create a door that not only meets its intended purpose but also adds aesthetic value to any space.
JPDoor has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2014, it was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Building Materials and Construction Components Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. JPDoor's technical characteristics and innovative approach have made it a standout design in the industry.
JPDoor is a testament to the power of merging tradition and innovation in design. By combining the functionality of a jalousie window with the convenience of a pivot door, Jerome Thia has created a door that not only enhances ventilation but also adds a touch of elegance to any space. With its user-friendly design and unique features, JPDoor is a must-have for those seeking a stylish and practical solution for their living spaces.
As Steve Jobs once said, "Stay hungry, stay foolish." JPDoor embodies this spirit of exploration and innovation, pushing the boundaries of design to meet the needs and requirements of end users. With its impact on the community and its ability to fulfill user needs, JPDoor is a prime example of a great design that leaves a lasting impression.
