Georgian Wines: A Design That Celebrates Tradition and Elegance

Creating a Unique and Memorable Label for Georgian Wines

Working on a design for a product with a very strong national character is a challenging and special task. Especially when talking about Georgian wines, which are intended for sale in the Russian Federation. Georgia is a very old country, well known for its traditions, winemaking, and works of art. The goal was to create a design that not only corresponded to the Russian consumer's idea of the appearance of Georgian wines but also made the Georgian winemakers proud of their product. Valerii Sumilov, the designer behind this project, aimed to avoid stereotypes and find a recognizable, attractive, and individual image for this product line.

Sumilov started by incorporating an ethnic Georgian image in the ancient Georgian stamping style as the main element of the label. This eye-catching design instantly draws the customer's attention and sets the product apart from its competitors. The label was printed on self-adhesive artistic paper with a distinct texture, enhancing the overall message of the design. To create an impression of ancient gold stamping, a unique technique of printing upon hot lettering was applied.

The label's height is 140 mm, and the width is 105 mm. The product's cap was personalized with an ornament that can also be seen on the label, adding an extra touch of elegance. The design was realized using the Antique Intensive White paper from Raflatac, chosen for its texture and ability to convey the desired message.

One of the main challenges of this project was finding a balance between the ethnic design elements and the information aspect that would be understandable to the Russian consumer. The Georgian wine market in Russia is highly saturated, and it was crucial to create an effective communication route with the consumer. The final design successfully communicates the product's main idea – it's a wine produced in a country with rich and ancient winemaking traditions.

The delicate ethnic ornament behind the medal on the label emphasizes this message, turning the label into a delicate work of art. The torn label edges further evoke the sense of century-old traditions and revelations hidden in ancient manuscripts. The overall design is a harmonious blend of tradition, elegance, and sophistication.

This exceptional design received the Iron A' Design Award in 2014. The award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Valerii Sumilov's design stood out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

Georgian Wines is not just a wine label; it is a celebration of Georgian culture, tradition, and craftsmanship. It captures the essence of Georgian winemaking and presents it in a way that is both visually striking and emotionally resonant. With its unique design, this label is sure to catch the eye of wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.
