Onsen Papawaqa: A Harmonious Retreat with Nature

Blending Design and Nature to Create a Tranquil Oasis

In the stress of today’s world, it is imperative to find a place of relief of mental and emotional strain, a resting paradise. Hence, my urge to create an Eden in the modern world, a place of rest for the mind and soul, a place to enjoy the wondrous ambience that is nature. Thus, my inspiration to create a place like Onsen Papawaqa.

Onsen Papawaqa, designed by Tang-Huang Cheng, challenges the perception that man-made structures cannot harmonize with nature. This hotspring hotel is a testament to the flawless integration of design and nature, offering a sanctuary away from the chaos of urban life. With its simplicity and elegance, Onsen Papawaqa provides a tranquil retreat where guests can find rest, tranquility, and relaxation.

Unlike many hotels that prioritize grandeur and opulence, Onsen Papawaqa embraces simplicity as its defining feature. The use of fair-faced concrete and wood as the main materials reflects the designer's commitment to sustainability and long-term beauty. As time passes, the colors of the concrete and wood fade, and the creeper climbing up the wooden facades breathes life into the building. This natural aging process adds to the building's aesthetics, creating a unique and ever-evolving artwork.

Spanning over 13,200 square meters, Onsen Papawaqa is nestled in the picturesque Yuandun, Tai'an Township, Miaoli County, Taiwan. Surrounded by misty mountains, running water, and native Formosan flora, the resort seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. The seasonal changes in flora create breathtaking scenes, reminiscent of the smoky landscapes of the regions south of the Yangtze River or the picturesque views of Huangshan.

Onsen Papawaqa offers a truly immersive experience, encouraging guests to slow down and connect with nature. The design emphasizes the importance of engaging with the environment, from listening to the rain under an umbrella to observing the splash on the floor. These simple interactions with nature awaken the senses and touch the soul, providing a profound and rejuvenating experience.

Recognized for its innovative design, Onsen Papawaqa was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2015. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that embody creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. Onsen Papawaqa's harmonious blend of art, nature, and leisure truly makes it a place where guests can escape the stresses of everyday life and embrace a slower, more meaningful pace.

Onsen Papawaqa is more than just a hotel; it is a testament to the possibility of coexistence between man-made structures and the natural world. With its serene atmosphere and commitment to sustainability, this hotspring hotel offers a haven where guests can find solace, tranquility, and a renewed connection with nature.
