View Dynamic Glass: Revolutionizing Architectural Design

Enhancing Comfort, Control, and Energy Efficiency

The concept of dynamic glass is not new, but View disrupted the market because of the person-power, manufacturing and logistics management in place to make smart windows mainstream.

About 25 billion square feet of glass are used for architectural purposes each year, yet windows are commonly regarded as one of the least energy efficient building components, responsible for up to 40 percent of total heating, cooling and lighting consumption. View seeks to fix this problem while advancing sustainable design and creating significant energy saving solutions for organizations throughout North America.

View Dynamic Glass, designed by View, offers several improvements for people. Natural lighting conditions can change the mood of building occupants, whether employees or potential customers. Research shows more natural light gives organizations a 6-15 percent increase in productivity. Workers in offices with poor light quality and views use significantly more sick leave hours. And daylighting of a congenitally windowless retail space can have a positive effect on sales. The implications of such findings are vast when considering costs related to efficiency, healthcare, sales and more.

View is the pioneer in large-scale architectural dynamic glass, a new generation of glass that intelligently changes tint levels in response to external and internal conditions, providing enhanced occupant comfort, control, and energy efficiency. View’s glass changes tint over the course of a day based upon latitude, longitude, sun angle, cloud cover, and where people sit.

A smart window is a dual-pane electrochromic window with two transparent conducting oxide films sandwiching an ion storage layer, an electrolyte and an electrochromic layer. When a low voltage is applied, the conductive oxide pushes the ions out of the storage layer and through the electrolyte to meet the electrochromic layer. This prompts the electrochromic material, containing tungsten oxide, to absorb or block light. This causes the window to darken. Reversing the voltage to the conductive oxide sends the ions back to its storage layer, causing the window to let in more light.

View Dynamic glass can be manufactured at 5x10ft per pane – the largest size in the industry. This enables new building designs with larger glass areas. View is the only company able to manufacture dynamic glass at sizes of 5 feet by 10 feet, a critical size to reach widespread adoption.

View Dynamic Glass can be likened to transition sunglasses for buildings. The product tints electronically to control the sun’s energy, seamlessly transitioning through four variable tints to provide continuous unobstructed views without heat or glare. Occupants can also manually control the tint level using View apps on mobile devices or by wall switches. This vastly improves the occupant experience by eliminating the need for blinds or shades and allowing occupants to enjoy unobstructed views.

View Dynamic Glass has received recognition for its outstanding design and innovation. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects, and Green Design category in 2015. This prestigious award is given to designs that showcase outstanding expertise, innovation, and excellence in both technical characteristics and artistic skill.
