The I-house, also known as the House of Horizon, was inspired by the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding nature, including the blue sea and sky. Situated on a long, narrow piece of land between a coastline road and a cliff, the key design concept was to create a living space that would harmonize with the natural environment.
One of the standout features of the I-house is its daring use of the natural slope of the land. The house sits two meters below the roadside, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the landscape without the need for extensive restructuring. The result is a beautifully aesthetic form that gives the impression of the house floating in the air.
Approaching the I-house from the road, the north side of the building appears flat and simple. As one gets closer, the white form of the west side gradually becomes larger and reflects the sunlight, creating a captivating visual experience.
Functionality was also a priority in the design of the I-house. The first floor serves as a parking area and is built from reinforced concrete, while the second floor, which doubles as an office, and the third floor living and dining area, are a mixed structure of wood and reinforced concrete. The V-shaped roof slope gathers runoff rainwater inside the structure, taking advantage of the line of sight in all four directions.
The I-house is not just a beautiful architectural design; it is a home that allows its residents to fully immerse themselves in the surrounding natural environment. With windows strategically placed to offer views of the sea from every room, the house supports living face to face with the vastness of nature. It is a space that allows residents to appreciate the rich variation of the Japanese climate and find joy in the ever-changing scenery.
The I-house, completed in December 2011, is located in Sasebo city, Nagasaki, Japan. It is a testament to the designer's commitment to creating spaces that enhance the quality of life and bring joy to the people who inhabit them.
The I-house, also known as the House of Horizon, designed by Masahiko Sato, is a unique residence that harmonizes with its natural surroundings. With its daring use of the natural slope of the land and its captivating aesthetic form, the I-house stands out as a testament to the beauty of blending architecture with nature.
