Architecture School: A Design Inspired by Innovation and Sustainability

Unleashing Creativity and Forward Thinking

The design philosophy of the Architecture School, created by Aditi Pai, revolves around discovery, experimentation, and pushing boundaries. Drawing inspiration from ideologies of Biomimicry and Sustainability, this unique design combines historical references with unconventional methods to create an innovative learning environment.

The Architecture School is located in Manipal, India, on an undulated site. To make the most of the topography, the spaces are distributed across three academic blocks and one administration block. These blocks are stacked upon each other, following the lay of the land, resulting in a stepped profile. The overall form of the building is also designed to be aerodynamic, directing winds like valley breezes, creating a comfortable and efficient space.

The construction of the Architecture School utilizes locally available stones such as Laterite, Kota, and Granite, along with concrete. This combination of materials not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also reduces the ecological footprint. The landscape surrounding the school is carefully planned with native trees, promoting biodiversity and further enhancing the sustainability of the campus.

Spanning over an area of 3 acres with a built-up area of 10,700 square meters, the Architecture School is a testament to thoughtful design. The structure seamlessly transitions from a single-story to a six-story building, adapting to the site's topography.

Designed to encourage active interactions between students, the Architecture School features a central plaza that is visually connected from all levels. This creates a sense of community and inclusivity, making all users a part of the events taking place. The circulation paths within the building are staggered, opening into courts and plazas at every level, making movement interesting and engaging.

The project commenced in August 2018 and is situated in Manipal, India. Extensive research was conducted to ensure the design's success. Wind and solar simulations played a crucial role in modulating the opening and built forms, while the study of local traditions and materials influenced the material and color palettes.

Overcoming creative, technical, and research challenges, the Architecture School successfully achieved its vision of being completely open and barrier-free while meeting all necessary requirements. The entrance facade, inspired by traditional temple gateways, was transformed into a parametrically generated facade, adding a touch of innovation to the design.

The Architecture School is a harmonious blend of research, local traditions, and climate-responsive factors. By reducing the ecological footprint and enhancing the micro-climate of the site, this design not only provides a comfortable indoor environment but also promotes outdoor comfort and well-being.
