Soleil 88 Phnom Penh: Transforming Traditional Row Houses into Distinguishable Individual Homes

Residential Development by Cocoon Architecture Ltd.

Row houses in Phnom Penh receive a facelift with the innovative design of Soleil 88 Phnom Penh by Cocoon Architecture Ltd. Staggered balconies and negative spaces transform the anonymous complex into distinguishable individual houses, while preserving the traditional features of the row houses.

Row houses are a common sight in Phnom Penh, forming a mega complex where individual houses blend together. However, Cocoon Architecture Ltd. saw an opportunity to enhance the individuality of each row house while maintaining the overall aesthetic. The design intervention focuses on the 1.5m façade zone, creating a literal "facelift" for the development.

By inserting staggered balconies at different levels of the row houses, buffer zones are formed in-between, effectively dividing the complex into distinguishable individual homes. The play of light and shadow, as well as the activities within and outside the balconies, add a dynamic element to the facades, making each row house unique.

What sets Soleil 88 Phnom Penh apart is the incorporation of negative spaces between the row houses. These recessed balconies serve as dividers, further emphasizing the individuality of each home and its residents. The traditional features of the row houses, such as balconies and covered roof gardens, are preserved to respect the local culture and accommodate the sub-tropical climate.

Cocoon Architecture Ltd. took into consideration the modern lifestyle of the target users, the younger generation of Phnom Penh. The design caters to their desire for individuality and privacy in city living. The recessed balconies prevent direct views from the street, while the main windows are tilted to avoid overlooking neighboring houses.

Completed in 2019 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Soleil 88 Phnom Penh showcases the potential of architectural intervention in transforming traditional row houses into modern, distinctive homes. The project not only respects the local culture but also meets the evolving needs and aspirations of the younger generation.

This innovative design by Cocoon Architecture Ltd. has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2021. The award acknowledges the practicality, innovation, and professional requirements met by Soleil 88 Phnom Penh, making it a well-deserved accolade for this outstanding residential development.
