Guerra's design draws its strength from the unique narrative of Brazil's ethnic pluralism. The architecture, while modern and sophisticated, establishes a solid symbiosis with the richness of the reserve. The vernacular construction techniques are complemented by interior details that echo the Brazilian 'bossa', creating a dialogue that underlines the privilege of being situated in a preserved rainforest area.
The choice of materials was crucial in achieving this interaction. The beauty of wood, in its natural state, is highlighted in the surfaces, architectural elements, and furnishings. Species like cumaru, tatajuba, ipe, and peroba were meticulously crafted by carpenters, disciples of the master Zanine Caldas. These elements are counterbalanced by Florim stones imported from Italy, used in floors and bathrooms, which despite their industrialized production, evoke the sensation of natural rock.
The project, which started in 2010 and was completed in 2017, was not without its challenges. The design team, which included Jefferson Gurgel, Nínive Resende, Bernardo Hauck, and Letícia Thibau, had to create an entire workshop on site to optimize the job. They also made the conscious choice to preserve all native vegetation, using the structure of the old hotel to build the new one on the same places as the old buildings.
Kuara is more than just a hotel; it's a private sanctuary that becomes a memory of the Brazilian identity. It's a reminder of the rich Brazilian nature, a generous provider of the primary foundations of survival. It invites its guests to a healthy relationship with the environment, rooted in respect and harmony with nature.
David Guerra's design for Kuara was recognized with a Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. Kuara, with its unique blend of vernacular and modern design, is indeed a worthy recipient of this prestigious accolade.
