Vending Cart Solar Cooler

Addressing the problems of an unreliable power grid in many parts of the world and the inaccessibility of cold beverages, PepsiCo's solution came in the form of a vending cart. The cart uses a sustainable power source, solar panels, to power the cooler and is packaged in a way that allows transportation to urban or inaccessible areas. The delivery system developed uses a stock tricycle design with an extremely minimal steel frame that can be fabricated locally.

The Pepsi Solar Cart is currently in a testing phase in Faisalabad and Islamabad, Pakistan. The carts allow vendors to run their business off the grid without the need for reliable electricity or infrastructure. The learnings from the testing phase are being assessed and applied to improving the functionality of the carts for an official multi-market global rollout.

In line with PepsiCo's commitment to environmental and human sustainability, the vending carts were designed to meet local fabrication capabilities using readily available materials and resources. The focus was on usability, safety, functionality, and aesthetics. This design has been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects, and Green Design category in 2015. The award acknowledges the outstanding expertise and innovation demonstrated by the design, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
