Jewelry Boutique Inspired by Nature

Designed by Jimmy Hung of Crane Studio, the Anabela Chan Joaillerie boutique at Ham Yard Hotel is a jewelry boutique that aims to be as much like a gallery as a shop. The design draws inspiration from the client's object d'art sculptures, resulting in bespoke bell jars and display units that frame the jewelry pieces. The organic and fluid stands, inspired by the anatomy of flowers, create a sense of elegance and beauty. The glass domes, resembling crystal clear water droplets, add a touch of sophistication.

The central display piece, known as the Jewel Chandelier, is the highlight of the boutique. It is designed to house an ever-changing display of the designer's one-of-a-kind pieces, creating a gallery of treasures. The overall design of the boutique aims to be welcoming yet intimate, with an air of luxury, modernity, and otherness that is true to the brand. The concept of framing is inherent in the design, symbolizing the act of looking through a window to something extraordinary on the other side.

The realization of the design involved a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. Each bell jar was blown by a London-based glass artisan to the size of the brand's object d'art pieces. The organic-shaped stems were CNC-cut in London and finished with VeroMetal spray in Oxford. These stems were then screwed into a circular timber base, creating a unique sculptural piece. The glass display cabinets and counter table were supported by steel section frames with Verometal spray finish, and tempered glass sheets were used for cladding. LED light strips were inset to provide a subtle illumination.

The design team faced the challenge of making the limited internal space feel luxurious and airy while providing adequate and organized display and storage areas for the client's three distinctive jewelry collections. The result is a boutique that not only showcases the jewelry but also tells a story about the brand and its inspirations. The mobile display units, including the Jewel Chandelier, are designed for easy reconfiguration and reassembly, allowing for maximum flexibility and reinvention of space.

The Anabela Chan Joaillerie boutique at Ham Yard Hotel was completed in November 2014. It has received recognition for its outstanding design, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in 2015 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
