Embrace: A Myoelectric Prosthetic Hand with Sensory Feedback

Revolutionizing Prosthetics with Affordable and Functional Design

There are 11.4 million people worldwide with hand amputations, with 80% of them residing in developing countries. Cliff Shin, along with his team, has developed Embrace, an advanced myoelectric prosthetic hand that aims to provide affordable and functional solutions for individuals with hand amputations.

Embrace is a breakthrough in the field of prosthetics, offering a myoelectric prosthetic hand with sensory feedback. Priced under $1000, this innovative design addresses the emotional and physical needs of patients, providing them with a sense of connection and empowerment.

One of the unique features of Embrace is its modular design, allowing for easy assembly with two-piece components. This design choice eliminates the need for complex processes that require two hands, making it accessible to individuals with limited dexterity. The finger joints utilize a four-bar linkage mechanism, ensuring consistent movement and increased force at the fingertips compared to traditional tendon-based designs.

The hand incorporates five linear actuators and a servo, enabling six degrees of freedom articulation. It attaches to a socket that overlays the residual limb, and embedded electrodes in the socket read muscle signals. These signals are decoded by a machine learning algorithm, allowing users to control various grips, including hand open, close, fine pinch, 3 finger grasp, and rest.

Embrace measures 260mm in height, 105mm in width, and 25mm in depth, providing a compact and ergonomic design that fits comfortably on the user's residual limb.

The development of Embrace began in November 2013 in Champaign-Urbana, IL, and the project is currently ongoing. The design team, led by Cliff Shin, includes Timothy Bretl, Aadeel Akhtar, and Patrick Slade, who have worked tirelessly to overcome technical and research challenges.

Recognizing the significance of this design, Embrace was awarded the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Cybernetics, Prosthesis, and Implant Design category in 2015. This accolade highlights the exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill demonstrated by the Embrace team.

Embrace is not just a prosthetic hand; it is a symbol of hope and empowerment for individuals with hand amputations. By combining affordability, functionality, and emotional connection, Cliff Shin and his team have created a design that has the potential to transform the lives of millions around the world.
