Revitalized Past: A Unique Residential House Design by Ta-Wei Yu

Preserving the Past While Embracing the Future

Located in Taipei, Taiwan, the "Revitalized Past" project covers a total area of 172 square meters. The design team, led by Ta-Wei Yu, utilized a combination of recycled materials, such as pallets and Taiwan cypress, along with hardwood, glass, fair-faced concrete, steels, and bricks to bring this vision to life.

One of the standout features of this design is the preservation of the old rooftop addition. This addition, common in Taipei walkups, showcases the disorder and autonomy of living conditions. By retaining the original truss and decking, as well as the deteriorated walls with a clear coating, the design pays homage to the past. To add warmth to the industrial vibe, planks of pallets were reused throughout the penthouse, forming a furniture collection and a backdrop wall with color stripes.

The integration of new and old elements is further enhanced by the presence of balconies and a roof deck, which offer panoramic views of the city and nature. The brick and fair-faced concrete walls not only anchor the design but also provide a sense of continuity between the past and the present.

Functionality and sustainability were also key considerations in the "Revitalized Past" design. The kitchen/dining area, instead of the conventional parlour, serves as the central junction, connecting private spaces and scenic corners. The stylish cellar and L-shaped kitchen create an inviting atmosphere for gathering and enjoying meals. Additionally, the use of recycled materials, such as Taiwan cypress flakes in the bedroom wall and pallet modules for furniture, adds a touch of eco-friendliness to the design.

Ta-Wei Yu's "Revitalized Past" design project was completed between August 2014 and February 2015. The attention to detail, preservation of the past, and incorporation of sustainable materials have earned this design the Silver A' Design Award in 2016 for Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design. This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding expertise, innovation, and excellence demonstrated by the "Revitalized Past" design.
